We're now at Art-O-Matic in DC!

We're so excited to be a part of 0ver 1000 artists participating in Art-O-Matic down in DC. It was a fun installation for Lee & myself; it made me realize that my work has really morphed since graduate school. I've gone from primarily being a printmaker/painter and creating works on canvas, to creating installations and exhibitions as a curator. Curatorial work is an artform, and for many they may not be exactly sure what it is that a curator does, or how one goes about curating. To educate a bit, a curator is one who selects and often interprets works of art. A curator is one who cares for art, they find a dialogue between objects and place them in such a way that you might look at them in a different perspective.

Drawing from the Source
a look into the artist's working process

ARTISTS' SOURCES ARE AS VARIED AS ARTISTS THEMSELVES, BUT REGARDLESS OF THE ARTIST, THE SOURCES ARE USUALLY FOUND IN THE PRIVATE REALM OF THE STUDIO - A SPACE THAT'S FREQUENTLY AS INACCESSIBLE AS IT IS ENCHANTING.

"DRAWING FROM THE SOURCE" OFFERS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER THE INNER WORKSPACE OF EIGHT VERY DIVERSE ARTISTS - DAVID PAGE, ELIZABETH BRADY, BEVERLY RESS, KATE MACKINNON, BETH HOECKEL, JULIE JANKOWSKI, STACY ARNOLD, AND LORI LARUSSO. JORDAN FAYE CONTEMPORARY HAS CRAFTED AN EXHIBITION OF AVAILABLE WORK THAT IS ALSO MATERIAL EVIDENCE OF THE ARTIST'S WORKING PROCESS - IN THE FORM OF NOTEBOOKS, STUDIES, AND OBJECTS.

NOTEBOOKS AND STUDIES ARE THE RESERVOIR OF THE ARTIST'S WORKING LIFE. IN THEM WE CAN SEE THE THRILL OF AN IDEA MADE SUDDENLY VISIBLE - OR IMAGES AND NOTATIONS HELD IN SUSPENSION UNTIL THE LIGHTING OF INSPIRATION STRIKES. OBJECTS ALSO CAN BE TOUCHSTONES THAT SPEAK TO AN ARTIST - AND THE POWER OF THESE ALMOST RITUAL TALISMANS CAN BE TRANSMITTED TO A RECEPTIVE VIEWER.

ALL THESE WINDOWS AND MORE PROVIDE A RARE, UNINHIBITED, AND REVEALING VIEW INTO ARTISTS WE MAY ONLY THINK WE KNOW - AT A NEW AND EXCITING BALTIMORE ART SPACE THAT WE ALSO ONLY THINK WE KNOW.

"DRAWING FROM THE SOURCE" OPENS AT JORDAN FAYE CONTEMPORARY WITH A PUBLIC RECEPTION ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, FROM 5 - 11PM. THE EXHIBITION CONTINUES THROUGH MARCH 30.

the reviews, the blogs

They say that all press is good press. Decide for yourself. The show was meant to generate more thoughts and ideas about art & the context in which art functions. I think it did a nice job of that. For those that were a bit irked by this exhibition, hopefully they have had some time to really think about things and now perhaps, see the larger picture.
